injury update
Believe it or not, I’m writing this entry one handed.
Three days after the release of BassQuakes, I had a huge workplace accident.
Most of you know that not only my main job is to play bass, but I also work in a restaurant here in Long Beach as a bartender, as music pays but not enough to make ends meet.
On Friday September 11, 2026 I went in for my shift as I usually do; my job requires me to transport buckets of boiling hot water from the kitchen to the bar, to fill the sinks that are used to wash, rinse and sanitize glassware. So here I was, one bucket of boiling hot water per hand, walking to the bar.
As I was about to turn the corner, the handle of one of the buckets snapped, and water spilled on both my right foot and the floor: I backed up in a spasm of pain, but since the floor was wet. I slipped. In the attempt of parrying my fall, I put my left hand forward, and broke my wrist on impact, on top of unfortunately and inadvertently spill the other bucket on myself.
Here I was, screaming from the pain, in a puddle of boiling water: I don’t remember how but I managed to get myself out of the way, ran to the bathroom and tried to pour cold water on myself. The ambulance arrived and transported me to Long Beach Memorial hospital, where they took X-rays and assessed the damage, which consists of second degree burns on my foot, left upper torso and face. But as horrible as that sounds, the most horrific news were right around the corner.
Reality came crushing heavily when they told me about my wrist being broken, as this not only meant all of my livelihood being taken away from me: to add insult to injury, I would also come to realize that it also means to not be able to take care of myself (washing wounds, prepping food etc…): I’m on my own and I don’t have anyone that could help me to any capacity, and at the same time I feel bad asking my friends to help, as we all have busy lives and they also have to deal with things on their own.
I was subsequently transferred to UCI Burn Unit in Orange, where I had stayed for a few days between CT scans, bloodwork, burn treatment, psychological evaluation and (questionable) monitoring. They dismissed me and I came back home.
All this to say that unfortunately, I had to cancel all of my shows for the foreseeable future, as I need to focus on healing: after the surgery (which is yet to be scheduled/established), I might have a clearer picture as to when I’ll be able to be fully operational. It might take from 2 to 6 or more months, who knows.
At the moment, I’m dealing with pain and putting things in motion in order to be compensated, infinite paperwork that I’m dealing with on my own, on top of everything else.
What a way to celebrate a music release, huh?
Things are still in development as I write, I have a string of upcoming appointments (EKG, chest X-ray, surgeon, psychiatrist), if you. are in my circle of friends and have my number feel free to contact me personally, and I’d be happy to entertain a chat with you, it would also help me feeling less alone.
So yeah, no more shows, releases or other musical enterprises for a while. To those who care, I’m sorry. Keep me in your thoughts.
